Cell phone repeaters have become a necessity these days. Even with the advanced technologies, we are still not able to get proper cell reception for making calls or browsing the internet. Usually, people blame network operators for having poor cell reception. However, there are several reasons for poor cell reception. The most common reason for poor cell reception might be the distance from the cell tower. In remote areas, there won’t be any cell towers to provide stronger cell signals. Mountains, hills, trees, and snow piles, etc. can block cell signals. Building materials like aluminum, steel, concrete, glass, and wire mesh, etc. will also block the cell signals. As a result, you won’t have a proper cell reception inside the building. That is why it is important to have a signal booster installed inside your home, office, or vehicle.

What Is A Signal Booster?

A signal booster is an electronic device designed specifically for amplifying the cell signal inside a building or a vehicle. A signal booster will increase the strength of the cell signals to a usable level. They are mainly of two kinds; analog and smart. Most of the signal boosters available today are analog ones. They use traditional techniques to amplify cell signals. They are also known as Bi-Directional repeaters. Smart signal boosters are the modern form of signal boosters. They are more powerful than analog boosters and come with around 100 dB gain.

A signal booster has three main components; an outside antenna, an amplifier, and an inside antenna. The outside antenna will capture the signals and send it to the amplifier unit. The strength of the cell signal will be increased in the amplifier unit. The inside antenna will redistribute the amplified cell signals to all the nearby cellular devices.

Types Of Cell Phone Repeaters Available

There are 4 different types of Cellular repeaters available based on where it is used. Let’s take a look at each one of them.

In-house Signal Booster

As the name suggests, this type of signal booster is used to amplify the cell signals inside your house. An average in-house signal booster can cover 2-3 rooms. These cell phone repeaters will work with all types of network carriers and can boost 2G, 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE signals. The range of an in-house signal booster will be around 2000-4000 square feet. However, it is important to note that the range of a signal booster mainly depends on the strength of the available cell signal. The working of the outside and inside antennas of the in-house signal booster will have a significant impact on the performance of the signal booster. The type of outside antenna used in the signal booster also determines how the cell phone repeater performs.

In-Building Signal Booster

This type of signal booster is very different from an in-house signal booster. An in-building signal booster is powerful than an in-house signal booster and can cover a much larger area to amplify the cell signals. An in-building cell phone booster is about 3 to 5 times powerful than an in-house cell phone booster. It can amplify and redistribute cell signals up to 100,000 square feet. Most of the industrial-grade signal boosters used to boost cell signals in large commercial buildings needs professional installation. They also require the approval of the respective service carriers. Industrial grade signal boosters are usually used for amplifying cell signals for over 50,000 square feet. Most often splitters are used for distributing amplified cell signals to all the rooms in a commercial building.

In-Vehicle Signal Booster

An in-vehicle signal booster is very necessary for your car especially if you are a frequent traveler. When you go on a road trip, you might encounter remote locations or dead zones where the cell reception is very poor. With a signal booster in your car, you won’t have to worry about the cell signal strength and you will be able to stay connected with your friends and family throughout the journey. There are different types of in-vehicle signal boosters available for cars, buses, trucks, RVs, and boats, etc. A small in-vehicle signal booster usually supports only one user at a time and also has a lower gain. Installing an in-vehicle signal booster is pretty easy. It comes with an instruction manual, so no professional help is needed.

M2M Signal Boosters

M2M or machine to machine signal boosters is used for IoT devices and machine to machine devices that use a cellular connection. These devices include ATMs, vending machines, and other devices that use cellular connectivity for transferring wireless data. The cable from the amplifier unit of the M2M signal booster directly connects to the modem. An M2M signal booster will improve the data downloads and uploads. If a vending machine is attached to an M2M signal booster, the company that installed the vending machine will get all the information about the stock, revenue, and security.
